Thinking Through Your Idea

Before you can consider starting your business you need to be sure that you actually have the right reasons for wanting to run a business in the first place. Wanting to run your own business because you have no other option is definitely not the right reason. It is important to see the creation of your own business as an opportunity to do something that you really want to do. Some typical reasons could include:There is nothing wrong with the first two, but the third reason is one of the most common. Many small businesses evolve from hobbies or part-time activities that actually expand into money-making opportunities. This is fine provided the business can generate sufficient profit to earn you a good living. This is one aspect that you need to be absolutely clear about from the outset. Your business must generate enough profit to reward you for the time and money that you will invest. Unless it does this you would be better shelving your ideas for a business and investing your money in a building society savings account.

Gaining The Support Of Your Family

Running your own business can have a dramatic effect on your family life so it is vital that you have their support before you start. If you have previously been in employment you can say goodbye to the standard nine to five working life. You may also find that your home life and your business life suddenly become intertwined.

If you are giving up a job to start your own business, the regular salary or wage payments will also cease. Your income will depend entirely on how successful your business becomes.

Working for yourself is not an easy option. It will require hard work with the probability of long hours. Paid holidays and days off sick will be a thing of the past. Weekends will also probably be encroached upon to enable you to deal with basic administration.

Unless you have support from your family, you will be fighting to survive on two separate fronts – at home and at work. You cannot afford these distractions. You must be able to concentrate your efforts on running your business.

Do You Have The Skills Required To Run A Business?

At this stage it might help if you consider your answers to the following questions:

  • Are you hard-working and self-disciplined?
  • How enthusiastic and motivated are you?
  • Can you work under severe pressure?
  • Do you take logical, structured decisions?
  • How well do you get on with people?
  • Are you willing to take advice?
  • How is your health and general well-being?

It doesn’t matter if you cannot give positive answers to all of the above. You’ll at least discover which you most need help with.

If you are leaving a job to start your own business there is a further test you can apply in order to ascertain whether you have what it takes to run a successful business. You may be very good at doing the work that your boss asks you to do but look at the position from the other side, could you do the work that your boss does? That is what running a business is all about – no longer working for someone but actually setting yourself tasks to do.

What Sort Of Business Do You Want To Start?

You don’t need a new innovative idea with which to start a business. There are, in fact, very few business start-ups that offer something that isn’t already available. The key point is that if you are going to offer something that can be bought elsewhere, you need to persuade your customers that they should buy from you rather than your competitor.

This is one of the most crucial, and often the most misunderstood aspects of running a business. Always have some form of competitive advantage. This could include:

  • lower prices
  • longer opening hours
  • better quality of service
  • offer of extended guarantees or maintenance periods
  • faster speed of response in the event of breakdown.

Of course, the actual advantages that you could offer will depend upon your business.
